The government is also planning to pass legislation in the country soon to stop the free use of deepfake apps. Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said Deepfake has become a huge challenge for the society.

A meeting was held between the Union Government and technology companies to discuss the growing misuse of Deepfake technology. The meeting, chaired by Union Minister Vaishnav, discussed the formulation and implementation of a strategy to ban deep-fake content in the country. Prior to the meeting, the government issued a notice on November 19 to all major social media platforms to ban deepfake content. Information Technology Minister Vaishnav announced at the meeting that the government will soon introduce new laws or make some changes to existing laws to stop the free use of Deepfake apps in the country. The Union Minister said deepfake apps have emerged as a new threat to democracy and are likely to cause serious damage to society. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier expressed concern over the abuse of deep fake and said he himself had been the victim of fake videos made using such technology. The Prime Minister also advocated legal action against deepfake, calling it a critical social problem.
