ITEP Course Full Details latest

What exactly is ITEP?

Integrated Teacher Education Program or ITEP for short is a vocational course prepared to become a teacher based on the National Education Policy-2 The BEd courses offered by Teacher Training Colleges or BEd Colleges have been abolished and the responsibility of managing ITEP has been handed over to multidisciplinary institutions like colleges and universities. Through ITEP, a student who wishes to take up teaching as a profession can now complete the course and obtain dual degrees with honors like Bachelor of Arts, B.Ed, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Commerce after passing the Higher Secondary Examination. The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has already started the process of collecting applications from higher education institutions online for ITEP and approving the applications. Therefore, since the last academic year, there has been widespread activity in colleges about ITEP.

ITEP Course

What are the new features in this ITEP?

1. ITEP will take a groundbreaking step in making the teaching profession a specialized profession like other professions. This is because now only those who are suitable or interested in becoming teachers will be given the opportunity to take this course through ITEP, which will leave no room for anyone to become a teacher by chance, ie only those who want to take teaching as their first choice . Therefore, ITEP will undoubtedly take strong steps in the coming days to revive the dignity of the teaching profession.

2. Separate ITEP curriculum for all levels of Foundational, Preparatory, Middle and Secondary in line with the revised school education structure (5+3+3+4) based on National Education Policy-2 There will be. This will allow students to enrich themselves with both academic and professional knowledge by pursuing dual graduate degrees at the same time as mentioned earlier.

3. Students will be selected at the All India level through National Common Selection Test for admission to this course. The National Examination Authority has been tasked to conduct the selection test at the national level. The institute has already issued a notification inviting applications from interested students for the selection examination to be held in the current academic year.

4. The ITEP curriculum will be of national standard across the country as it will be based on the curriculum prepared by the National Council for Teacher Education. However, taking into account the need for local knowledge. Universities or touch education institutions can make adjustments of up to 30 per cent in the curriculum.

5. Another groundbreaking step in the National Education Policy-2020 is to take steps to improve the quality of teacher education by involving multidisciplinary institutions like colleges and universities in teaching profession curricula like 'ITEP' The 2012 report of the Justice Burma Commission set up by the Supreme Court alleged that most of the teacher training institutions in the country provide poor quality education. For this, it is a welcome and timely step to entrust multidisciplinary higher education institutions with the responsibility of managing ITEP. Based on the National Education Policy-2020, teacher training institutions running only BEd degrees have been advised to transform themselves into multi-disciplinary institutions by 2030, otherwise these institutions will close down.

6. Like other higher education courses, ITEP will also have multiple admission and exit facilities under the new National Education Policy. The four-academic ITEP course will consist of a total of eight months, which will include field experience and teaching practice as well as school internships.

Since there are multiple admissions and exits in this course, a student who leaves after completing one year will be awarded a certificate, a student who leaves after completing two years will be awarded a diploma and a degree with honors in the subject of his choice and those who successfully complete 4 years will be awarded dual bachelor's degrees with honors like BA-BEd, BSc-BEd or B.Com-BEd. This 4-year course will be considered as the minimum qualification to become a teacher.

Are we ready to accept ITAP? Now the question is how are we prepared to implement vocational teaching courses like ITEP? Looking at the colleges currently applying for ITEP, it can be seen that these institutions of higher learning are facing difficulties in meeting the requirements set by the National Council for Teacher Education due to the various documents required for ITEP like designated land, separate houses and libraries The process of applying online and getting approval from the National Council for Teacher Education by collecting and submitting documents of infrastructure certificates, human resources and physical assets is not easy.Specifically, ITEP for 50 students

Colleges are facing considerable problems regarding the educational and professional qualifications of departmental heads and other subject teachers required to run a unit. The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has stipulated that the Head of Department required for a unit of ITEP should have a Master's degree in any subject including UGC norms, an MA and a Doctorate degree in Education. Since such professionally qualified persons are employed as teachers only in teacher training institutions running BEd courses, it is natural that colleges face considerable difficulties in finding such persons. Although the NCTE's revised Gazette Notifications-2021 and 2024 state that higher education institutions can use physical resources from other departments or institutions to run ITEP, there are no clear guidelines on how to use such resources from other departments

Not mentioned in the gazette notification. Accordingly, many colleges in Assam have already joined hands with BEd colleges to apply for ITEP. The good news for us is that Hem Barua Colleges in Bahuna, North Lakhimpur, Sayduar and Tyagri have already received approval from NCTE to run ITEP in Assam. Other colleges are also continuing their efforts but the number of government BEd colleges in Assam is very limited and everyone will be deprived of the opportunity to merge with BEd colleges in this way. Therefore, it is worth mentioning that apart from the government BEd colleges in Assam, some DIETs (District Education and Training Institutes) like Jorhat, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh are running BEd courses under universities and these are prescribed by NCTE for ITEP. There are a number of new teachers with educational and professional qualifications. Therefore, these teachers working in diet should be involved in ITEP. It would be a very timely step for the government to make it possible. While the DIETs are responsible for improving school education under the National Education Policy-2020, it is highly recommended that the departments take steps to involve the DIETs already running BEd courses in ITEP. b. Otherwise, many higher education institutions will be deprived of opening ITEP even if they wish due to lack of qualified teachers.

Another aspect that is felt to be necessary for the successful implementation of ITEP is to create proper publicity or awareness about ITEP among the students studying in schools and colleges. This is because if students are not aware of the importance or benefits of vocational courses like 'ITEP', many talented students interested in teaching profession will be deprived of this benefit. Since the National Examinations Authority has already advertised online for applications from students for the selection test for inclusion in ITEP, it is highly recommended that there be proper publicity in the society.

We hope that ITEP will play an important role in reviving the status of teaching as a special profession in the society in the coming days. This, however, will have to wait for the successful implementation of ITEP as well as the National Education Policy Public awareness, vision and wisdom of government policy makers and political goodwill will play a decisive role in this regard.
